We are organizing an informal network of
individuals whose research interests include cetacean remains in archaeological
contexts, after April in 1999. Because cetacean remains occur in widely
different geographical and cultural contexts, individual researchers may
often be unaware of relevant studies (published or ongoing) that address
problems similar to theirs, problems that, in many instances, are unique
to cetacean zooarchaeology. Accordingly, we feel the establishment of an
informal network would be beneficial in that it would promote and facilitate
scientific exchange amongst the network members. In future, it might also
serve as the basis for a more formal 'subunit' of an archaeological or
zooarchaeological organization. We call the network the 'Cetacean Zooarchaeology
Research Network'. While the network would focus on cetacean zooarchaeology,
we would of course welcome the participation of anyone interested in sea
mammal remains in general.
